Number Plate Builder: Design Your Custom UK Plates Online

Our Number Plate Builder lets you design and order fully road-legal plates for your car, bike, van, or show vehicle in just a few minutes. Pick your registration, choose a style, add a flag or border, and watch your plate come to life on screen before you buy. Every road-legal plate is made in the UK to the current British Standard, so it is ready to fit, and ready to pass an MOT, the day it lands on your doormat.

Start building your plate now and skip the guesswork. Want the full picture first? This guide walks you through every option in the builder, explains what is legal and what is not, and helps you pick the right plate for your vehicle.

Personalized plates are more in demand than ever. DVLA figures show personalised registrations generated almost £289 million in 2024/25, and more than 9.4 million have been sold since auctions began in 1989 (AM Online / DVLA FOI data). With that many drivers making their vehicles their own, having your physical plates made correctly, and legally, matters more than ever. That is exactly what our builder is for.

How Our Number Plate Builder Works

The builder is quick, visual, and beginner-friendly. You do not need to know any of the rules in advance, because the tool guides you and spaces your registration correctly for you. Here is the full flow, start to finish.

  1. Choose your mode. Select road-legal (for driving on public roads) or show plate (for off-road display only). The builder defaults to road-legal so your design stays compliant.
  2. Enter your registration. Type your reg exactly as issued. The builder applies the legal spacing automatically, so you never have to guess where the gap goes.
  3. Select your plate style. Go classic with 2D, add depth with 3D gel, or make a statement with 4D and 5D laser-cut characters.
  4. Pick your plate size. Standard car, 4×4, motorcycle, import, or a model-specific fit. Choose the size that matches your vehicle.
  5. Add flags, badges, and borders. Finish your plate with an approved national flag or identifier, or unlock custom colors and slogans in show mode.
  6. Choose front, rear, or both, then check out. Confirm your options, upload your proof of entitlement where required, and place your order. We dispatch the same day.

Prefer to talk it through, or need a shape or size that is not listed? Send us a custom enquiry and our team will build it for you.

Road-Legal Plates vs Show Plates: Pick the Right Mode

The very first choice in the builder is the most important one, because it decides what you are allowed to do with your plate.

Road-legal plates

These are the plates you fit to drive on UK roads. They meet the current BS AU 145e British Standard, use the legally required Charles Wright font in solid black, and carry the correct size, spacing, and reflective finish. They also show the supplier details and British Standard mark. Order in this mode and your plates are built to pass an MOT. You will need to provide proof of entitlement to the registration (more on that below).

Show plates

Show plates are for off-road display only, car shows, exhibitions, showrooms, photo shoots, and private land. Because they are not for the road, show mode unlocks the fun stuff: custom colors, tinted and neon finishes, slogans, custom spacing, and bespoke borders. They are printed without the legally required supplier and British Standard markings, so they must not be used on a public road. If the plate is for everyday driving, always choose road-legal. You can read the official position on the GOV.UK number plate rules.

Number Plate Styles You Can Build

We manufacture the full range of plate styles in-house, from clean and classic to bold and three-dimensional. Every style below is available fully road-legal (MOT compliant) or as a custom show plate. Here is how the most popular styles compare.

Choose the Right Plate Size for Your Vehicle

Picking the correct size is the step drivers most often get wrong. The builder gives you presets for every common vehicle, so you can match your plate to your car, bike, or import without measuring anything. Here are the sizes you will see.

Vehicle / plate type

Typical size

Notes

Standard car

520mm x 111mm

The default UK oblong plate for most cars

4×4 / large rear

Square or deep rear plate

For SUVs and 4x4s with a square plate recess

Motorcycle

Approx. 9″ x 7″

Rear only; bikes do not need a front plate

Import

330mm x 165/178mm

Sizes to suit US, Japanese, and EU imports

Short / small

From 285mm wide

Shorter plates for fewer characters

Model-specific

Made to model

Precision fits for popular makes and models

Driving something unusual, or restoring a classic with a tricky recess? We also make fully custom-sized plates to fit any vehicle. Just send us the measurements and we will handle the rest.

Add Flags, Badges, and Borders (What Is Legal)

This is where your plate gets its personality. What you are allowed to add depends on whether you chose road-legal or show mode.

On road-legal plates

You can add one approved national flag or identifier on the left-hand side. The approved options are:

  • Flags: the Union flag, the Cross of St George (England), the Scottish Saltire, and the Welsh Dragon.
  • Identifiers: GB, UK, ENG, SCO, CYM, or Wales, shown next to the flag.
  • Green flash for EVs: fully electric, zero-emission vehicles can display the green flash on the left of the plate. Petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars cannot.

Anything beyond these approved symbols is not permitted on a road-legal plate, and decorative colored borders or slogans move your plate into show-plate territory.

On show plates

Show mode opens up custom colored and 3D borders, slogans, badges, and finishes so you can build something that truly stands out at an event. Remember these are for display use only, not the road.

What Makes a Number Plate Road-Legal? The Rules Explained

UK number plates are governed by the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 and the BS AU 145e British Standard, which became mandatory for all new and replacement plates fitted on or after 1 September 2021. Here is what a compliant plate must do.

  • Use the correct font. Characters must be the Charles Wright 2001 typeface. You cannot stretch, squash, or restyle them.
  • Be a single shade of black. On plates fitted from 1 September 2021, characters must be one solid shade of black. Two-tone, carbon, and shadow effects are not allowed.
  • Follow the size and spacing rules. Characters are 79mm tall with a 14mm stroke, an 11mm gap between characters, and a 33mm gap between the two character groups. Mis-spacing to spell a word is illegal.
  • Use the right colors. The front plate is black on reflective white; the rear plate is black on reflective yellow.
  • Carry the legal markings. The plate must show the supplier’s name and postcode and the BS AU 145e mark.
  • Stay uncovered and readable. Tinted, smoked, or colored covers are illegal and can carry a fine of up to £1,000.

A common worry is whether 3D and 4D plates are allowed. They are. The DVLA confirms that characters can be three-dimensional, so raised acrylic (4D) and domed gel (3D) characters are road-legal, as long as the whole character, including its sides, is a single shade of black and the plate meets BS AU 145e. When you build in road-legal mode, we take care of all of this for you. For the full detail, see the official GOV.UK guidance.

Documents You Need to Order Road-Legal Plates

By law, every DVLA-registered supplier must confirm you are entitled to the registration before making road-legal plates. This protects you and keeps plates out of the wrong hands. When you order, you will need two things.

  • Proof of identity and address: such as a driving license, utility bill, or bank statement.
  • Proof of entitlement to the registration: such as your V5C logbook, the new keeper slip, a V750 certificate, or a V778 retention document.

Show plates do not require these documents, because they cannot be used on the road. Uploading your proof during checkout takes a few seconds and keeps your order moving toward same-day dispatch.

Number Plate Builder Pricing: What Affects the Cost

There is no single price for a number plate, because your plate is built to your choices. A few factors move the price up or down.

  • 2D printed plates are the most affordable. 3D gel sits in the middle, while 4D and 5D laser-cut plates are premium.
  • A single front or rear plate costs less than a matched pair.
  • Size and fitment. Oversized, import, and model-specific plates can cost a little more than a standard oblong.
  • Flags, borders, surrounds, and a fixing kit are optional add-ons.

The builder shows your price live as you choose, so there are no surprises at checkout. And with free shipping on orders over £40 and same-day dispatch, you get premium plates without premium hassle. Build your plate and see your price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Number Plate Builder free to use?

Yes. Designing your plate in the builder is completely free. You only pay when you are happy with your design and place your order, and the price updates live as you choose your options.

Are 3D and 4D number plates legal in the UK?

Yes. The DVLA confirms that number plate characters can be three-dimensional. Our 3D gel and 4D acrylic plates are fully road-legal and MOT compliant when ordered in road-legal mode, because the characters are a single shade of black and meet the BS AU 145e standard for font, size, spacing, and reflectivity.

Will my plates pass an MOT?

Any plate you order from us as road-legal is built to pass an MOT. If a tester is ever unfamiliar with 3D or 4D plates, contact us and we will provide written confirmation that your plates meet the British Standard.

What documents do I need to order number plates?

For road-legal plates, you will need proof of identity and address (such as a driving licence, utility bill, or bank statement) and proof of entitlement to the registration (such as your V5C logbook, new keeper slip, V750, or V778 document). Show plates do not require any documents.

Can I design a number plate as a gift?

Yes. A custom plate makes a unique gift. Design it in the builder and have it delivered to any UK address. Note that show plates are for display only, and road-legal plates require proof of entitlement to the registration.

What size number plate do I need?

Most cars use the standard 520mm x 111mm oblong plate. 4x4s, motorcycles, and imports use different sizes, and the builder gives you a preset for each. If your vehicle needs a non-standard fit, we can make a custom-sized plate to your measurements.

Can I get plates for an electric car?

Yes. Fully electric, zero-emission vehicles can display the optional green flash on the left of the plate. Simply select the EV option in the builder. Hybrids and petrol or diesel cars are not eligible for the green flash.

Are show plates road-legal?

No. Show plates are for off-road display only, such as car shows, exhibitions, and private land. They are printed without the legally required supplier and British Standard markings, so they must not be used on a public road. Choose road-legal mode for any plate you intend to drive with.

Can I build plates for a motorcycle or imported car?

Yes. The builder includes motorcycle and import sizes, and you can order a rear-only plate for a bike. For anything unusual, send us a custom enquiry and we will build a plate to fit.

How fast is delivery?

We dispatch orders the same day when they are placed before noon, with next-day delivery available across the UK and free shipping on orders over £40.
