What are 3D gel number plates?

A 3D gel plate is built by bonding clear, high-gloss gel resin over solid black characters, creating a smooth, rounded, domed finish that catches the light. The result is the distinctive raised lettering people recognise as a premium plate, with a soft, glossy curve rather than the sharp, flat-topped edges of laser-cut acrylic. Because the gel is applied as a liquid resin and cured, each character has a slight three-dimensional rise off the surface, giving genuine depth and a quality feel. 3D gel vs 4D plates – what’s the difference?

This is the question almost every customer asks, so here’s the straight answer. 3D gel characters are made from domed gel resin: rounded, glossy and with a subtle, understated depth. 4D plates use solid laser-cut acrylic characters that are bolder, sharper-edged and have greater physical depth (typically 3mm or 5mm). 3D gel is the elegant, lower-key choice; 4D is the bold standout. If you want the best of both, our 5D plates combine 4D’s laser-cut acrylic depth with a glossy gel topping. There’s no legality difference between them – all are road-legal when ordered as road-legal, it’s purely a matter of the look you prefer.

Are 3D gel number plates road legal?

Yes. Every 3D gel plate we supply as road-legal is 100% UK road legal and MOT compliant. The DVLA confirms that the characters on a number plate may be three-dimensional, so raised gel characters are permitted provided the plate meets every other requirement of BS AU 145e: solid black characters in the legally required Charles Wright font, correct character size and spacing, a reflective background (white front, yellow rear), and our supplier name, postcode and the British Standard number printed on the plate. Will my 3D gel plates pass an MOT?

Yes. Any plate ordered from us as road-legal is built to pass an MOT. Occasionally an MOT tester may be less familiar with 3D and 4D plates; if that ever happens, contact us and we’ll provide written confirmation that your plates meet the British Standard.

What documents do I need to order?

By law, every DVLA-registered supplier must confirm you’re entitled to the registration before making road-legal plates. You’ll need proof of identity and address (driving licence, utility bill or bank statement) and proof of entitlement to the registration (V5C logbook, new keeper slip, V750 certificate or V778 retention document). Show plates don’t require these documents.
