Materials and Manufacturing Process

A 5D plate is built in layers. We start with a premium retro-reflective acrylic base that meets the reflectivity and resilience requirements of BS AU 145e. Each character is then laser-cut from solid black acrylic — the same hard, weather-resistant material used in our 4D plates, to a precise 3mm or 5mm depth.

Once cut, the characters are cleaned, positioned in the legally compliant Charles Wright layout and bonded to the base with high-strength VHB adhesive. Finally, a clear gel-resin layer is applied over the top face of each character, then cured to a hard, glossy finish. That gel crown is the defining difference between a 4D plate and a 5D plate. Every road-legal plate is finished with the supplier and British Standard markings the law requires.

DVLA Compliance and Legal Requirements

5D number plates are 100% road-legal in the UK when manufactured correctly and ordered as road-legal. The “5D” label is an industry name for an acrylic-plus-gel finish; the characters are three-dimensional and remain plain black, which the DVLA permits. To be road-legal and pass an MOT, a plate fitted after 1 September 2021 must comply with BS AU 145e. That means solid black characters in the Charles Wright font, the correct character height and spacing, a reflective white front and reflective yellow rear, and the supplier’s name, postcode and the BS AU 145e marking on the plate. The plate must be a single shade of black with no removable or reflective character finishes — which is why tinted, neon and two-tone effects are show-only.

Heads-up on terminology: a small number of suppliers still quote the outdated “BS AU 145d” standard. The current and correct standard since 1 September 2021 is BS AU 145e, every road-legal plate we make meets it.

3mm or 5mm – which depth should you choose?

Both depths are road-legal; the difference is purely visual. The 3mm option keeps things refined while still adding the gel shine. The 5mm option pushes the characters further off the plate for a bolder shadow and the most dramatic version of the 5D look. Choose 3mm for understated shine, 5mm for maximum impact.

Care and Maintenance

5D plates are low-maintenance. Clean them with warm soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth, wiping gently around the raised characters. The acrylic and cured gel are robust enough for normal pressure washing, but keep the lance around 30cm or more away and avoid blasting directly at the character edges at very close range.

Should I choose 3mm or 5mm?

Are 5D plates durable? Can I pressure wash them?
