What Are 2D Number Plates?

2D number plates are the standard, flat printed plates fitted to most vehicles on UK roads. The registration is printed directly onto a reflective surface, so the characters sit flush and smooth with no raised edges. By law, the front plate shows black characters on a white background and the rear shows black characters on a yellow background.

The “2D” simply refers to how the characters are made — printed flat, rather than built up in layers like 3D gel or 4D acrylic plates. It is the simplest, most affordable and most common plate style in the UK, and it is exactly what most cars leave the factory with.

Are 2D Number Plates Road Legal?

Yes. Our 2D number plates are 100% road legal and MOT compliant. In fact, flat printed plates are the standard format you will see on most vehicles in the UK.

UK plates are governed by the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 and must meet British Standard BS AU 145e, which applies to plates fitted from 1 September 2021. To stay legal, every plate we make:

• uses the Charles Wright font in a single, solid shade of black
• displays characters at the legally required size and spacing
• sits on a plain reflective background — white at the front, yellow at the rear
• carries our supplier name and postcode, plus the BS AU 145e mark

UK 2D Number Plate Specifications

For a standard car plate, the Charles Wright characters must meet these measurements:

Do 2D Number Plates Pass an MOT?

Yes. A correctly made 2D plate meets MOT requirements, as long as it is not cracked, faded or obscured and the characters stay clear and correctly spaced. Because ours are made to BS AU 145e with the right font and reflectivity, they are built to pass first time. Just take care that any fixing screws do not sit over a character and change how it reads.

Road-Legal Plates vs Show Plates

We make both road-legal and show plates. Road-legal 2D plates can be used on the road and displayed on your vehicle. Show plates are for off-road display only — car shows, events and photography — and are not legal for road use. If you need plates for everyday driving, always choose the road-legal option.

What Documents Do You Need to Buy 2D Number Plates?

Buying road-legal plates is not quite as simple as adding to basket. UK law requires every DVLA-registered supplier to check two things before making your plates: who you are, and that you are entitled to use the registration. This protects against plate fraud and vehicle cloning, and it applies to all road-legal plates — including 2D printed, short and motorbike plates.

You will need one document from each of the two groups below.

Proof of Identity

Confirms who you are. Accepted documents include:

• Driving licence (photocard)
• Passport

Your document should be current and clearly show your details.

Proof of Entitlement

Confirms you can use the registration. Accepted documents include:

• V5C registration certificate (the logbook) — the most common
• V5C/2 new keeper supplement — if you have just bought the car and do not have the full V5C yet
• V750 certificate of entitlement — for a private or personalised registration
• V778 retention document — if the registration is held on retention
• V948 authorisation certificate — issued by the DVLA where needed

1. Clean the mounting area and let it dry fully.
2. For a clean, drill-free finish, apply the adhesive pads to the back of the plate and press firmly into place.
3. Prefer screws? Position them carefully so they do not sit over a character and change how it reads — a badly placed screw can make a plate illegal.

Take your time lining the plate up straight before pressing down, as the adhesive grips fast.

What colour should the front and rear plates be?

By law, the front plate is black on white and the rear plate is black on yellow. We supply both correctly by default.

Can I add a flag or national identifier?

Yes. UK plates may show a permitted national identifier on the left-hand side — the Union (UK) flag, the national flags of England (St George), Scotland (Saltire) or Wales (the red dragon), or the GB or UK letters. You will find the available options in our builder. Fully electric and other zero-emission vehicles are also legally allowed an optional green flash in the same position.

Can I order 2D plates without a V5C?

Yes, but you will still need valid proof of entitlement — for example a V5C/2 new keeper slip, V750, V778 or V948. If your logbook is lost, you can request a replacement from the DVLA using form V62.
