4D Acrylic Number Plates
Bold, sharp and unmistakably modern, 4D acrylic number plates are the most popular standout upgrade on UK roads today. Each character is laser-cut from solid black acrylic and raised off the plate, giving genuine physical depth that catches the light from every angle. Unlike a printed or domed character, a 4D letter has a crisp, squared edge you can run your finger along, the look that has made these plates the default choice for enthusiasts, fleet owners and everyday drivers who want their vehicle to look finished rather than factory-flat.
At NRP Nationwide we manufacture every 4D plate in-house as a DVLA-registered supplier, built to the current British Standard (BS AU 145e) and supplied fully road-legal and MOT-compliant as standard. You choose the depth, size, border and badge; we cut, bond and dispatch, usually the same day.
Why Choose 4D Acrylic Number Plates
The appeal of 4D comes down to depth done properly. A standard printed plate is completely flat, and a 3D gel plate has a soft, rounded dome. A 4D plate sits between bold and refined: solid acrylic characters with sharp, vertical edges that read as deliberate and premium rather than fussy. It is the style most people picture when they think “upgraded plates.”
Because the characters are cut from hard acrylic rather than printed or moulded, they hold their shape and colour for years. The finish is a deep gloss black that resists fading, and the raised edge gives your registration a tailored, three-dimensional presence that works as well on a family hatchback as it does on a performance car. If you want a clear visual step up without straying into show-only territory, 4D is the sweet spot — and it remains fully road-legal when ordered as such.
For a softer, glossier alternative you might prefer our 3D gel number plates; for the cleanest, most traditional finish, our 2D printed plates are the classic choice.
Key Features
Every 4D acrylic plate we produce shares the same core build quality. The characters are laser-cut from impact-modified solid black acrylic for clean edges and long-term durability. They are bonded to a premium retro-reflective base using high-strength industrial adhesive, so they stay put through weather, washing and motorway speeds.
You can choose between 3mm and 5mm character depth depending on how bold you want the effect, and the gloss black finish is UV-stable so it won’t fade in sunlight. Road-legal plates are produced in the mandatory Charles Wright font and carry the required supplier details and British Standard marking. A fixing kit is included with every order, and you can specify your size, border and badge during the build.
Benefits
A 4D plate is a small change that noticeably lifts the look of a vehicle. The raised acrylic adds depth and shadow that flat plates simply can’t reproduce, giving your car a sharper, more considered appearance.
Durability is a real, practical benefit too. Solid acrylic characters tolerate pressure washing and won’t peel or discolour the way cheaper finishes can, so the plate still looks new long after fitting. Because the look is achieved entirely in plain black acrylic, a 4D plate stays road-legal and MOT-friendly, you get the upgrade without the risk of a fine or a failed test that comes with tinted, neon or two-tone show styles. And with same-day dispatch and a straightforward online builder, getting a set is quick and hassle-free.
Materials and Manufacturing Process
The defining feature of a 4D plate is its material. The characters are cut from black acrylic a tough, weather-resistant polymer, rather than the polyurethane gel resin used for 3D gel plates. That distinction is what gives 4D its signature squared, solid edge versus the rounded dome of gel.
Manufacturing happens in stages. We start with a premium retro-reflective acrylic base that meets the reflectivity and resilience requirements of BS AU 145e. Your registration is then laid out in the legally compliant Charles Wright font, and each individual character is laser-cut from solid black acrylic to a precise 3mm or 5mm depth. The cut characters are cleaned, positioned and bonded to the base with high-strength VHB adhesive, which forms an extremely strong, long-lasting bond. Finally, every road-legal plate is finished with the supplier and British Standard markings the law requires. The result is a plate that is precise, consistent and built to last.
DVLA Compliance and Legal Requirements
This is the question we’re asked most, so let’s be clear: 4D acrylic number plates are 100% road-legal in the UK when manufactured correctly. “4D” is an industry nickname, not a separate legal category, the characters are three-dimensional, and the DVLA confirms that raised three-dimensional characters are permitted provided the plate meets the British Standard.
To be road-legal and pass an MOT, a plate fitted after 1 September 2021 must comply with BS AU 145e. In practice that means solid black characters in the Charles Wright font, correct character height, width and spacing, a reflective white front and reflective yellow rear, and the supplier’s name and postcode plus the BS AU 145e marking displayed on the plate. It must also be a single shade of black with no removable or reflective character finishes.
This is also where show plates differ. Tinted, neon, carbon and two-tone effects have not been road-legal since the 2021 standard came into force, regardless of who sells them. We manufacture 4D plates as fully road-legal by default; any non-compliant finish is clearly sold for off-road display use only. You can read the official rules on the GOV.UK number plate guidance. If an MOT tester is ever unsure about your 4D plates, contact us and we’ll provide written confirmation that they meet the British Standard.
3mm or 5mm – which depth should you choose?
Both depths are road-legal; the difference is purely visual. The 3mm option gives a refined, sharp-edged look that suits drivers who want a clean upgrade that isn’t shouty. The 5mm option pushes the characters further off the plate for a bolder, more dramatic shadow and maximum standout. If you’re unsure, 3mm is the safe, classic choice and 5mm is for those who want the effect to be unmistakable.
Vehicle Compatibility
We make 4D acrylic plates to fit virtually any UK vehicle. The standard oblong size (520mm × 111mm) suits most cars, and we also produce 18-inch, 16-inch and 14-inch lengths for vehicles with shorter plate recesses. For 4x4s and SUVs that take a square rear plate, and for Range Rover-style sizing, we cut to the appropriate dimensions so the plate sits correctly in the recess.
4D works beautifully on imports and modern vehicles with shaped plate areas, and we can produce made-to-measure sizes where a standard plate won’t fit. Riders should note that very small motorcycle plates can limit how well raised characters display; for two-wheelers we’ll advise on the best legal layout and you can explore our dedicated motorbike number plates for the correct sizing. If you’re not certain which size your vehicle needs, send us your details and we’ll confirm before manufacturing.
Ordering Process
Ordering takes only a few minutes. Start by building your plate online: enter your registration and choose your style, depth (3mm or 5mm), size, border and badge. Next, confirm you need the road-legal (MOT-compliant) option rather than a show plate.
Because we’re a DVLA-registered supplier, the law requires us to confirm you’re entitled to the registration before we make road-legal plates. You’ll upload proof of identity and address along with proof of entitlement to the registration, full details are listed in the FAQs below. Once your documents check out, we manufacture your plates and dispatch the same day where possible, with next-day delivery available across the UK and free shipping on orders over £40.
Why Choose NRP Nationwide
We’re a UK number plate manufacturer, not a reseller. Every 4D plate is laser-cut and assembled in-house using the same acrylic, adhesive and reflective materials we’d put on our own vehicles, which means we control the quality at every step rather than shipping in finished plates and adding a logo.
As a DVLA-registered supplier, every road-legal plate we make meets BS AU 145e and uses the compliant Charles Wright font, so it’s built to pass an MOT first time. We back that with a lifetime warranty, free returns, same-day dispatch and round-the-clock support. Thousands of UK drivers trust us across our full range, from 2D printed and 3D gel right through to 5D, 6D and 7D styles, and our 4D plates are the standout favourite.
Care and Maintenance
4D acrylic plates are low-maintenance, but a little care keeps them looking sharp for years. Clean them with warm soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth, wiping gently around the raised characters. The acrylic is robust enough to withstand normal pressure washing, but as a sensible precaution keep the lance at a reasonable distance (around 30cm or more) and avoid blasting directly at the edges of the characters at very close range.
Steer clear of harsh solvents, abrasive sponges or strong chemical cleaners, which can dull the gloss finish over time. Check the plate occasionally after winter or long motorway use, and if you ever notice anything that isn’t right, get in touch, our plates are covered by a lifetime warranty, so we’ll put it right.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are 4D acrylic number plates road legal?
Yes. When ordered as road-legal, our 4D plates are 100% UK road-legal and MOT-compliant. They’re built to the current British Standard (BS AU 145e), with solid black acrylic characters in the Charles Wright font. “4D” is simply an industry name — the characters are three-dimensional, which the DVLA permits.
Will my 4D plates pass an MOT?
Yes. Any 4D plate ordered from us as road-legal is built to pass an MOT, with the correct font, character spacing, reflective backing and required markings. If a tester is ever unfamiliar with 4D plates, contact us and we’ll supply written confirmation that they meet BS AU 145e.
What’s the difference between 3D gel and 4D acrylic plates?
3D gel plates use a domed polyurethane resin for a soft, rounded, glossy finish. 4D plates use laser-cut solid acrylic characters for a sharper, squared edge and greater depth. 3D is the subtle upgrade; 4D is the bolder, standout choice.
Should I choose 3mm or 5mm depth?
Both are road-legal. 3mm gives a refined, sharp look; 5mm raises the characters further for a bolder shadow and maximum standout. Choose 3mm for a clean upgrade and 5mm if you want the effect to be unmistakable.
Are tinted, neon or carbon 4D plates legal?
No. Since 1 September 2021, road-legal plates must be a single shade of black with no tinted, neon, carbon or two-tone effects. We sell those finishes for off-road show use only. Our standard 4D plates are fully road-legal.
Are 4D plates durable? Can I pressure wash them?
Yes. The solid acrylic characters are weather-resistant, UV-stable and bonded with high-strength adhesive, so they tolerate normal pressure washing and won’t fade or peel. Keep the lance a sensible distance away to be safe.
What documents do I need to order road-legal plates?
By law we must confirm you’re entitled to the registration. You’ll need proof of identity/address (such as a driving licence, recent utility bill or bank statement) and proof of entitlement to the registration (such as your V5C logbook, new keeper slip, V750 certificate or V778 retention document). Show plates don’t require these.
What sizes do you offer?
Standard oblong (520mm × 111mm) plus 18in, 16in and 14in lengths, square 4×4 and Range Rover sizing, and made-to-measure cuts for imports and unusual recesses. Tell us your vehicle and we’ll confirm the right fit.
Can I get 4D plates for a motorbike?
Motorbikes use smaller, rear-only plates, which can limit how raised characters display. We’ll advise on the best legal layout — see our motorbike number plates for correct sizing.
How are 4D plates fitted?
Each order includes a fixing kit. You can use the supplied adhesive pads or a screw kit. Clean and dry the surface first, position the plate, and press firmly. Detailed instructions are included.
How long does delivery take?
Once your documents are verified, we dispatch the same day where possible, with next-day UK delivery available and free shipping on orders over £40.
What warranty do you offer?
Every plate is covered by our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, alongside free returns. If anything isn’t right, we’ll resolve it.
